Step One: CLARIFY Your Values, Your Vision, Your Mission/Purpose and Your Goals

YOUR VALUES

“The world is full of people who have stopped listening to themselves or have listened only to their neighbors to learn what they ought to do, how they ought to behave, and what the values are they should be living for.” ~Joseph Campbell

CLARIFY YOUR VISION

Your Vision – Step 1: Today we are going to look at the end results you want this year, using this powerful statement: “begin with the end in mind and keep it in mind always.” It is important to arrange a comfortable place and give yourself plenty time to complete the exercise. Allow yourself to dream in this process and then to clearly define what success is for you, looking at the different areas of your life as a guide.

Example:  PhysicalI am so happy and grateful that I now look and feel great.  I weigh 130 pounds and my clothes fit well. I do yoga twice a week, lift weights twice a week and do cardio twice a week. I eat healthy at least 80% of the time, I get at least 7 hours of sleep a night and wake up feeling rested. I drink plenty of water—at least 8 glasses of alkaline water per day.

And so on, with each area of your life: finances, career, relationships, spiritual, personal (mental/emotional) growth, home/surroundings, fun/leisure, contribution, etc.

Action Step:

Take pen and paper and write this sentence: “I am so happy and grateful that I have/am”. Take some deep breaths and allow yourself to go to a peaceful place and really get into your heart. Dream and imagine one year from now you are living your ideal life. What are you doing, who are you being and what do you have? Quietly reflect and allow your imagination to wonder. Let yourself connect with the future, then proceed to describe your vision in vivid detail. Cover every area of your life, using the life wheel as a guide.

I am so happy and grateful that I have/am: _______________________________

  • What have I accomplished?
  • What am I doing for relaxation and inspiration?
  • What am I doing to contribute to a better world?
  • What am I doing for personal growth?
  • What am I doing for fun and recreation?
  • Where am I living?

Your Vision – Step 2: Envision Your Ideal Day

Now you know what you want your life to look like and what kind of person you want to be. Since your life is comprised of a collection of days, the next step is to paint a vivid picture of your ideal day. Again with pen and paper, walk through every detail of your day, including vivid descriptions of your surroundings.

Example: In my ideal day, I awake naturally and watch the sunrise. Then I do some stretching or Qi Gong and enjoy some time in meditation/prayer.  I enjoy a lovely breakfast of fruit or a protein shake. I do 30 minutes of exercise then shower and start my workday.  On the days I’m in my practice, I start at 9 am and see patients who want, need and appreciate comprehensive, restorative and esthetic dentistry.  I take breaks when needed to stretch, breathe, eat, drink and use the bathroom.  At the end of the day, I feel great about the care I have provided and my patient truly appreciates it.  I finish around 4 or 4:30 and finish up for the day so I can get home by 5 to walk my dog.  After I walk the dog, I help my husband finish up dinner, then we eat and spend a little family time.  After that, I work an hour or two on my coaching business and then at 9, I am getting ready for bed, reflecting on the day and getting ready for tomorrow, praying and reading a bit and am turning the light off by 10 to enjoy a great sleep before tomorrow.

Action Step – It’s your turn to write out your vision of Your Ideal Day:

Your Vision – Step 3: Record Your Vision in Pictures (Create a Visionboard) and/or Audio

Buy a poster board and either draw pictures or cut out pictures that represent your ideal life. It is also helpful to record your vision auditorily using your phone or an online recording tool (like Audacity). Listen to the recording at least once a day.  It’s also helpful to write it out everyday, along with your values, mission and goals.
