This week, on the Practicing with the Masters podcast, my returning special guest is Barry Polansky. Barry is a clinical dentist, communicator and thought leader in dentistry and is masterful at the art of case presentation. He is a graduate of Queens College, class of 1969 and the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, class of 1973. He then spent 2 years in the US Army Dental Corp at Fort Dix, NJ, entered private practice in 1975 and has been practicing in Cherry Hill, NJ ever since. He went to the Pankey Institute in 1990 and has been on the visiting faculty since 2004.

Barry is the author of the book The Art of Examination and has written over 100 articles for most of the dental journals. He is the founder of the newsletter “Private Practice” which has become a popular blog along with the TaoOfDentistry.com and his current blog is CasePresenter.com, where he previewed work for his new book, The Art of Case Presentation. Barry has lectured to numerous groups across the world including The Dawson Alumni Meeting, The American Dental Association annual meeting and the Texas Dental Association.

Today, we discuss the art of listening and how vital this talent is for a dentist to have in order to be effective with patients. Barry explains why you need to learn how to be in the present moment with your patients, be relaxed and  improvise. In order to be successful in your communication with your patients, you need to be able to have no agenda and become comfortable with the term “creativity,” to use it in your practice, your life and your mindset. This episode is filled with advice from Barry that he himself has used in his own practice to become one of the most sought-after dentists, speakers, writers and mentors.
