Creating Your “Dream Team”

Relationships are the most important things in our lives, no matter whether at home or at work. Our dental team is made up of many relationships – each of us with ourselves, each of us with each other and then various combinations. The basis of relationships and one of the primary things that make them work or not work is communication. Good communication builds trust, whereas poor communication breaks down trust. The better your team, the better your practice and the happier your patients are.

In dentistry, we have an opportunity to create an environment that ensures our success. To reach that success, it is critical to realize we are all unique and we were designed the way we are for a reason. God gave each of us a part to play and no one person has it all. To learn to work in unity and harmony, appreciate the strengths and weaknesses of each person on the team. We should strive to see where the other is better than us (what their strengths are) and where they can help us (where our weaknesses are). Don’t try to change others to be like you. Learn how to motivate their strengths and train up their weaknesses. There should be no condemnation. Embrace the fullness of each personality style.

Each personality needs the others to be successful and to get the job done holistically and beautifully. Appreciating the differences is what allows us to work together best. Managing our expectations of each other is also helpful. Our practice provides constant opportunities to learn from each other, coach each other and help each other grow and be the best we can be.

One of the easiest personality profiles to use and a great one to start with is the DISC profile. In the DISC profile, there are four behavioral styles. The purpose of finding your style(s) and sharing them is not to put you in a box; it’s to help you better understand your strengths, preferences and natural behaviors. It will also help you understand and appreciate others.

There are many facets to this tool. For each style, it reveals general highlights, intensity, patterns of behavior, tendencies, desires, and suggestions for effectiveness. Every single aspect is not spot on every time, but I’ve found it to be very accurate and helpful.

D is for Dominance- This person wants to feel in control. They may become argumentative and may not seem open to coaching. They are usually in a hurry and like to make quick decisions. They are usually results-oriented, like action and challenges, and solving problems.

I is for Influence- These people enjoy attention. They are outgoing and energetic. They are usually loud and are most interested in having fun. They often don’t listen well and are typically concerned about their appearance. They like people and participating in groups.

S is for Steadiness- These are the nice people. They can be indecisive and want others approval to make decisions. They like consistency and predictability. They are sometimes known to say yes just because they don’t want to say no. They are patient, loyal and like to help people.

C is for Conscientiousness- This is the analytical personality – they weigh pros and cons. These people like a lot of information and details. They are not very emotional and typically “think” more than feel. This person would likely come across organized and prepared. They enjoy a systematic approach to situations.

Some of these styles mix well together and some generally clash with each other.
