"drBrown"We all know the old stereotype about dental patients — that most of them would do practically anything to avoid their dentist.

But it doesn’t have to be this way.

Today’s guest tells us how and why relationship-based, health-first care could be the antidote to this persistent problem.

Dr. Bill Brown has been in private dental practice for 45 years. After graduating from the University of Iowa in 1963, he went into private general practice in DeMoines. He soon found the hustle of a six-day workweek to be far too much for any dentist, let alone one fresh out of dental school. Luckily, his new working relationships with Dr. Bob Barkley and Dr. Nathan Kohn Jr. changed the trajectory of his practice and life. Their pioneering work, which placed more responsibility for dental health onto the patient, revolutionized dentistry and became the foundation for their engaged approach to dentist-patient relationships.

Dr. Brown has practiced and spread this message throughout his long career, attempting to get patients to take a proactive role in their health. In this conversation, he talks about involving patients in their exams and how listening to a patient’s prior experiences can make for better overall dental hygiene. Dr. Brown also discusses the transformative work of Dr. Barkley and Dr. Kohn and how their research should be applied to keep progressing dentistry as a profession.

Finally, we take some questions from you all about how both patients and dentists can benefit from this approach, and how to get patients firmly on board with your treatment philosophy.
